Although most of us have heard of the Canary Islands, the main islands we visit are usually Lanzarote, Gran Canaria and Tenerife, however Fuerteventura, the second largest of the islands, is proving to be just as popular.

Although it is not as built as its sister islands, Fuerteventura has some of the most beautiful landscapes in the Canaries and has more than 150 beaches, a true paradise for beach lovers!

The Canaries enjoy the sun all year round and although Fuerteventura is a bit cooler than some of the other islands, temperatures are still in the low 25s during the winter months and well into the 30s during the summer.

There are numerous tourist complexes situated around the island and these include Jandia, Costa Calma and Morro Jable in the south, Corralejo and El Cotillo in the north and Caleta de Fuste on the east coast, right next to the airport.

All the resorts offer a lot to do for tourists and new tourist attractions are being developed around the island to attract even more visitors. There are now two golf courses, a water park, go-kart tracks, clay pigeon shooting, horseback riding, quad biking, and biking, to name just a few!

Water sports are also popular on the island with a number of fantastic dive sites on offer. The Wind Surfing Championship is also held in Jandia every year, attracting thousands of surfers from all over the world.

If you like to walk, Fuerteventura is an ideal island for hiking and with the right tour guide you can find breathtaking landscapes off the beaten track. It is also worth renting a car for at least a day or two to explore the more secluded parts of the island and find one or two of the most remote beaches Fuerteventura has to offer.

Tasting typical Canarian food in an inland restaurant is also essential and can be much cheaper than eating in one of the tourist complexes. Fish restaurants are also worth trying and many give you the opportunity to see how fish is cooked in a typical Canarian outdoor oven.

In general, the island of Fuerteventura is a must for people of all ages. With the option of having fun at one of the holiday resorts, relaxing on a secluded beach, or being a little more adventurous and trying your hand at go-karting, Fuerteventura seems to have it all.
